PDF Format Becomes ISO Standard

I don't know why this hasn't received more attention from the Adobe community, but this is pretty big news. The Portable Document Format (PDF) is now accessible as an ISO International Standard.

Adobe made the decision to open the PDF format over a year ago and submitted the Portable Document Format (PDF) to the ISO at the end of January. According to Jim King the ballot passed by a vote of 13 to 1.

The PDF format has always been "open", but now Adobe (the original developer and copyright owner of the format) has relinquished control to ISO, who is now in charge of publishing the specifications for the current version (1.7) and for updating and developing future versions.

“By releasing the full PDF specification for ISO standardization, we are reinforcing our commitment to openness", says Kevin Lynch, Chief Technology Officer at Adobe. "
